Quick Take

Yes, many U.S. consumers can order their own blood tests through direct-access or direct-to-consumer lab services, depending on state law, test type, age, and provider availability.
The usual workflow: choose a test online, pay self-pay pricing, receive a lab requisition through the service’s clinician network or direct-access model, visit a collection site, then receive results in a secure portal.
Compare the total cost, not just the test price. Look for provider-order fees, draw fees, cancellation fees, whether the lab bills insurance, and whether duplicate panels overlap.
Common starter tests include CBC, CMP, lipid panel, hemoglobin A1c, TSH, ferritin/iron studies, vitamin D, and urinalysis—but the “right” test depends on the question you are trying to answer.
Do not self-diagnose from one abnormal flag. Labs use reference intervals, and some healthy people have results outside the range. Discuss unexpected or concerning findings with a licensed clinician.

What it means to order your own blood tests

Ordering your own blood tests usually means using a consumer-facing lab marketplace, national laboratory storefront, or at-home collection company instead of first obtaining a separate order from your personal doctor. In U.S. lab policy, this is often called direct access testing or direct-to-consumer testing. CMS describes direct access testing as consumer-initiated testing of human specimens and notes that CLIA regulates laboratories, while state laws may limit who can order tests or where direct-access testing is available.

In practice, most online blood-test companies still use some form of clinician authorization behind the scenes. You pick a test online, the company or partner clinician reviews/authorizes the order where required, and the specimen is collected at a lab draw site such as Quest, Labcorp, BioReference, or another network. The lab performs the test and posts results to an online portal.

This model can be helpful for self-pay consumers who want transparent pricing, people with high-deductible plans, travelers needing titers or TB testing, and people who want to track a known wellness marker between medical visits. It also has limits: a lab result is only one piece of clinical information, and broad “just check everything” panels can create confusing abnormal flags, false positives, repeat testing, and anxiety.

Lab Tech Insight: A blood test is not just a number. The result depends on the test method, specimen type, collection tube, draw technique, timing, transport conditions, and the lab’s validated reference interval. That is why copying a “normal range” from the internet can be misleading.

How to order your own blood tests step by step

If you are trying to understand how to order your own blood tests, the safest approach is to start with the health question, not the shopping cart.

1. Define the question you are trying to answer

Examples: “I need a TB blood test for school,” “I want to recheck a lipid panel after lifestyle changes,” or “My clinician asked me to monitor vitamin D but my insurance cost is high.” A focused question reduces the chance of buying unnecessary or overlapping tests.

2. Choose a reputable ordering route

Prefer services that clearly identify the performing lab network, use CLIA-certified laboratories, provide secure results access, list limitations and state restrictions, and explain what happens if a result is critical. CLIA establishes quality standards for laboratory testing performed on human specimens such as blood, body fluid, and tissue; CMS also states that CLIA regulates most U.S. laboratory testing to help ensure accurate, reliable, and timely results.

3. Confirm your state and age eligibility

State rules vary. For example, Jason Health says it serves 47 states and excludes New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Quest Health states that some purchases can be blocked because of state, age, or sex restrictions, and Labcorp OnDemand states that services are available only with a physician order and where permitted by law. Always enter your real state of residence and collection location before assuming a test is available.

4. Compare total out-of-pocket cost

Look beyond the headline test price. Some services add a physician-order or administrative fee, while others build fees into the displayed price. Quest Health lists an additional physician service fee starting at $6 for Quest lab tests, collected for PWNHealth-affiliated provider oversight. Labcorp OnDemand’s refund policy notes a $20 fee for eligible refunds before sample collection, covering the applicable provider order fee and administrative costs.

5. Buy the test and download the requisition

After checkout, you should receive instructions and either an electronic order or printable requisition. Check that your legal name and date of birth are correct. Bring government ID if the collection site requires it, plus the requisition number or barcode.

6. Prepare correctly and get collected

Some tests require fasting, morning collection, medication timing, or avoidance of supplements. MedlinePlus notes that not all blood glucose tests require fasting and recommends asking your provider whether fasting is needed for your test. For consumer orders, read the test page and the lab instructions carefully.

7. Save and share results responsibly

Download a PDF copy for your records. If you plan to discuss the result with your clinician, send the full report—not a screenshot of one number—because the report includes units, reference intervals, specimen comments, and performing laboratory details.

Provider comparison: prices, availability, and tradeoffs

The table below summarizes major self-pay options checked on August 6, 2026. Prices and promotions can change quickly, so use this as a shopping framework rather than a guarantee.

Provider	Common examples and listed prices checked	Availability notes	Best fit	Watch-outs
Quest Health	CBC $29; CMP $49; lipid panel $59; A1c listed at $35.10 sale price / $39 regular on the shop page. Quest also lists a physician service fee starting at $6 for Quest lab tests.	Consumer purchase through Quest Health; some tests have age, sex, or state restrictions, and shoppers must be 18+ to purchase according to Quest’s help center.	People who want to use the Quest ecosystem directly and prefer a simple national lab portal.	Menu may be more limited than reseller marketplaces; total cost may include provider fee; restrictions are test-specific.
Labcorp OnDemand	CBC $29; CMP $49; lipid panel $59; A1c $39; Standard Health Test $99; Comprehensive Health Test $169.	Labcorp describes OnDemand as self-order testing followed by immediate physician review and order; its patient page says available in all 50 states for listed OnDemand offerings.	People who prefer Labcorp locations or want a straightforward national lab storefront.	Not every specialized test is available; services are where permitted by law; refund/cancellation terms matter.
Jason Health	Annual Physical panel listed at $56 and includes CBC, hemoglobin A1c, lipid panel, and CMP.	Jason Health states it uses 2,300 walk-in labs in 47 states and excludes NY, NJ, and RI; results are usually available in 1–3 days.	Budget-focused self-pay shoppers who want bundled routine panels.	Availability is not nationwide; verify collection site and whether the exact tests match your needs.
Ulta Lab Tests	Quick Order page listed CBC with differential and platelets at $22.95 and lipid panel plus CMP at $45.95.	Uses partner lab networks; availability and pricing can vary by location, promotion, and test.	Price shoppers comparing à la carte tests and promotions.	Promotional pricing, draw-site rules, and state restrictions should be verified at checkout.
At-home kit companies	Varies widely by test; many focus on dried blood spot, saliva, urine, stool, or self-collected swabs rather than venous blood panels.	State and specimen restrictions vary; some tests require mailing a sample to a lab.	Convenience for select screening or wellness tests when in-lab venipuncture is inconvenient.	Not the same specimen type as a standard venous blood draw; collection errors, shipping delays, and limited menus can affect usefulness.

Lab Tech Insight: If two providers offer a “CMP,” check whether it is the same panel and performing lab. Most CMPs are standardized, but panels can differ in included analytes, calculation methods, and report formatting. For trend tracking, using the same lab network over time can reduce method-to-method variation.

Which blood tests can consumers commonly order?

Consumer-facing menus often include routine wellness and screening-oriented tests. Availability varies, but common categories include:

CBC with differential: red blood cells, hemoglobin/hematocrit, white blood cells, platelets, and sometimes white-cell differential. See CTX STAT!’s CBC Blood Test Guide.
Comprehensive metabolic panel: glucose, electrolytes, kidney-related markers, liver enzymes, protein, albumin, bilirubin, and calcium. See our CMP Guide.
Lipid panel: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and ratios or calculated values depending on the lab. See Lipid Panel Test.
Hemoglobin A1c: an estimate of average blood glucose exposure over roughly the prior few months.
TSH and thyroid panels: thyroid-stimulating hormone alone or with free T4/free T3 and antibodies.
Iron, ferritin, B12, folate, and vitamin D: nutrient and anemia-adjacent testing.
STI testing: HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis, herpes, and expanded panels depending on age and state rules.
Titers and immunity tests: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B surface antibody, and TB blood testing for school, work, or immigration-related needs.

More is not automatically better. Broad panels increase the number of opportunities for a value to fall outside a reference interval by chance. Diagnostic-test overuse literature consistently warns that unnecessary testing can add cost, trigger follow-up cascades, and create anxiety from false-positive or non-actionable findings.

How to prepare for self-ordered bloodwork

Preparation depends on the exact test. Before collection, read the provider’s instructions and the lab requisition. If the instructions conflict, contact the ordering service before you go.

Factor	Why it matters	Practical tip
Fasting	Glucose and triglycerides are especially meal-sensitive; some lipid testing can be nonfasting depending on the clinical purpose.	If fasting is required, ask how many hours and whether water, black coffee, tea, or medications are allowed.
Time of day	Hormones such as testosterone and cortisol can vary by time.	Schedule morning collection when the test page specifies morning timing.
Biotin supplements	High-dose biotin can interfere with some immunoassays, including certain thyroid and hormone tests.	Ask the ordering service or clinician whether to hold biotin before testing.
Hydration	Dehydration can make venipuncture harder and may concentrate some values.	Unless fasting instructions say otherwise, drink water before the draw.
Hard exercise	Strenuous workouts can affect enzymes, inflammation markers, creatinine, and sometimes blood counts.	Avoid unusually intense exercise right before routine wellness labs unless you are intentionally testing that effect.
Recent illness	Infection, inflammation, and recovery can shift CBC, liver enzymes, glucose, and inflammatory markers.	For routine wellness testing, consider whether waiting until you are back to baseline makes the result more useful.
Specimen quality	Hemolysis, clotting, underfilled tubes, delayed processing, and wrong tube type can invalidate or distort results.	If the report notes specimen problems, do not over-interpret the affected analytes; ask whether recollection is needed.

How to handle your results safely

When results arrive, review the full report: test name, result, units, reference interval, abnormal flags, collection date/time, specimen comments, and performing laboratory. MedlinePlus explains that a lab report uses a reference range to show whether results fall within values expected for that lab and that different labs may use different methods and reference ranges.

An abnormal flag does not automatically mean disease, and a normal result does not guarantee health. Results must be interpreted in context: symptoms, medical history, medications, pregnancy status, age, prior results, and why the test was ordered. Mayo Clinic Press notes that some healthy people will have results outside a reference range and that trends across values can be more informative than a single number.

Contact a qualified healthcare professional if you receive a critical result, a result that is far outside range, a result that conflicts with how you feel, or a pattern you do not understand. If you ordered testing for a clinician to review, share the PDF promptly. If you have symptoms such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, severe weakness, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, signs of stroke, or other emergencies, do not wait for portal messaging—seek urgent care or emergency services.

Questions to ask before you buy

FAQs

Can I really order my own blood tests without seeing a doctor?

Often, yes—but it depends on your state, age, test type, and provider. Many online services include physician oversight or an affiliated clinician order as part of the purchase. Some states and specific tests have restrictions, so verify at checkout.

What is the cheapest way to order blood tests?

For routine panels, bundled self-pay services can be cheaper than buying each test separately. Compare the total cost, including provider fees, draw fees, discounts, and whether the same tests are already included in a panel.

Are self-ordered blood tests the same tests my doctor orders?

Many are the same common laboratory tests run by national or regional clinical labs. However, the ordering context, available menu, specimen type, reporting format, and follow-up process may differ.

Can I use insurance for direct-to-consumer lab testing?

Usually these services are self-pay and do not bill insurance. Some may accept HSA or FSA cards. If you need insurance coverage, ask your clinician or insurer before purchasing.

Do I need to fast before bloodwork?

Not always. Fasting requirements vary by test and by the purpose of testing. Read the test instructions, and when in doubt ask the ordering service or your healthcare professional.

What if my result is abnormal?

Do not diagnose yourself from one flag. Review the full report, check the lab’s reference interval and specimen comments, and discuss unexpected, critical, or concerning results with a qualified healthcare professional.

Why do reference ranges vary between labs?

Labs may use different instruments, methods, reagents, populations, and validation processes. Always interpret a result against the reference interval printed on the report from the lab that performed the test.

Can I order blood tests for someone else?

Usually no, unless the service specifically supports dependent or minor testing and you are legally authorized. Many consumer services require you to order for yourself and use accurate personal information.
